Division input/output tables

  • A division input/output table is a chart that helps students understand division patterns by applying a division rule to input numbers to get output numbers.

The table consists of two columns:

  • Input (Dividend): The number being divided.
  • Output (Quotient): The result after applying the division rule.

A fixed number (divisor) is used to divide each input value.

Example: If the rule is ÷2, then:

  • Input: 10 → Output: 5
  • Input: 16 → Output: 8
  • Helps in understanding division facts and multiplication connections.
  • Example: If all outputs are decreasing by half, the divisor might be 2.

Given some input and output values, students must determine the division rule.

Example:

  • Input: 18 → Output: 6
  • Input: 24 → Output: 8
  • Rule: ÷3

Given a rule and some numbers, students fill in the missing values.

Example: Rule ÷4

  • Input: 20 → Output: __ (Answer: 5)
  • Input: __ → Output: 7 (Answer: 28)
  • Multiply the output by the divisor to verify the input.
  • Example: If the rule is ÷5 and the output is 4, the input should be 4 × 5 = 20.
  • Helps students apply division in real-life contexts.
  • Example: A bakery packs 12 cookies per box. If there are 36 cookies, how many boxes are needed? (36 ÷ 12 = 3)
  • Strengthens division fluency.
  • Develops logical thinking and pattern recognition skills.
  • Prepares students for algebraic concepts in later grades.
