Divide by 2

Division is splitting a number into equal parts. When dividing by 2, you are splitting the number into two equal groups.

  • Any number divided by 2 gives half of that number.
  • Example: 6 ÷ 2 = 3.
  • Use counters, blocks, or pictures to demonstrate how to divide groups evenly.
  • Example: Place 8 blocks in two equal groups to show that 8 ÷ 2 = 4.
  • Even numbers can be divided by 2 evenly without remainders.
  • Odd numbers will leave a remainder when divided by 2.
  • Example: 9 ÷ 2 = 4 remainder 1.

Dividing a number by 2 is finding “half” of that number.

  • Example: Half of 10 is 5, so 10 ÷ 2 = 5.
  • Sharing candy equally between two friends.
  • Splitting a pizza into two equal parts.
  • Recognize patterns when dividing by 2, such as all results (quotients) being whole numbers for even inputs.
  • Incorporate simple story-based problems to make learning relatable.
  • Example: “If you have 12 apples and you want to share them equally between 2 baskets, how many apples will be in each basket?”

Remember how to divide by 2:

2 ÷ 2 = 1
4 ÷ 2 = 2
6 ÷ 2 = 3
8 ÷ 2 = 4
10 ÷ 2 = 5
12 ÷ 2 = 6
14 ÷ 2 = 7
16 ÷ 2 = 8
18 ÷ 2 = 9
20 ÷ 2 = 10

Learn with an example

10 ÷ 2 =____

  • Remember how to divide by 2:
  • 2 ÷ 2 = 1
    4 ÷ 2 = 2
    6 ÷ 2 = 3
    8 ÷ 2 = 4
    10 ÷ 2 = 5
    12 ÷ 2 = 6
    14 ÷ 2 = 7
    16 ÷ 2 = 8
    18 ÷ 2 = 9
    20 ÷ 2 = 10
  • So, 10 ÷ 2 = 5.

12 ÷ 2 = ____

  • Remember how to divide by 2:
  • 2 ÷ 2 = 1
    4 ÷ 2 = 2
    6 ÷ 2 = 3
    8 ÷ 2 = 4

    12 ÷ 2 = 6
    14 ÷ 2 = 7
    16 ÷ 2 = 8
    18 ÷ 2 = 9
    20 ÷ 2 = 10
  • So, 12 ÷ 2 = 6.

16 ÷ 2 =_____

  • Remember how to divide by 2:
  • 2 ÷ 2 = 1
    4 ÷ 2 = 2
