Divide by counting equal groups

  • Division is the process of splitting a number into equal groups. It helps us find out how many items are in each group or how many groups can be formed.
  • Equal groups mean each group has the same number of items. For example, if you divide 12 apples into 4 equal groups, each group will have 3 apples.
  • Use physical objects (counters, blocks, or drawings) to group items equally. This makes the concept more concrete and easy to visualize.
  • Step 1: Start with the total number of items.
  • Step 2: Arrange the items into equal groups.
  • Step 3: Count the number of groups formed.

If there are 15 candies and you make groups of 3, count how many groups you have.

15 ÷ 3 = 5 groups.

  • Division can be written as an equation:

Total ÷ Number in Each Group = Number of Groups

  • Example: 20 ÷ 4 = 5 .
