Multiply by 1
key notes :
Identity Property of Multiplication
Any number multiplied by 1 remains the same.
Example: 7×1=7 ✅
Rule:
Number×1 = Number
1×Number = Number
Why it works:
Multiplying by 1 means you have 1 group of that number.
Example: 1 group of 5 = 5
Visual Representation:
Draw 1 row of objects to show multiplication by 1.
Example: 🍎🍎🍎 (1 row of 3 apples → 3 apples)
Practice Examples:
9×1=9
1×12=12
0×1=0 ✅ (special case with 0)
Tip for Students:
Remember: Multiplying by 1 does not change the number!
It’s like having just one copy of the number.
Learn with an example
Multiply.
1 x 8 =____
The identity property of multiplication says that the product of any number and 1 is that number. So, the product of 1 and 8 is 8.
You can also look at this model to see that 1 × 8 = 8.
1 row with 8 dots in it has 8 dots in all.

3 x 1 = ?
Here’s a picture of what 3 times one pencil looks like.

3 x 1 = 3!
Multiply.
6 × 1 =
The identity property of multiplication says that the product of any number and 1 is that number. So, the product of 6 and 1 is 6.
6 × 1 = 6
You can also look at this model to see that 6 × 1 = 6. This model shows 6 rows with 1 dot in each row. There are 6 dots in all.

This number line also shows that 6 × 1 = 6. Count by 1s on the number line. Count forward 6 times.

The last arrow ends at 6.
6 × 1 = 6
let’s practice!
