Formatting titles
Key Notes:
1. What Does Formatting Titles Mean?
- Formatting titles refers to how we write and present the names of books, stories, songs, movies, and other works to show they are special.
2. Different Formats for Titles
There are three main ways to format titles:
- Italicizing
- Titles of long works like books, movies, and TV shows are written in italics.
- Example: Charlotte’s Web, The Lion King.
- Using Quotation Marks
- Titles of short works like poems, short stories, and songs are placed in quotation marks (” “).
- Example: “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”, “The Tortoise and the Hare”.
- Underlining (for handwriting)
- When writing by hand, we use underlining for titles of books, movies, or other long works instead of italics.
- Example: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Frozen.
3. How to Choose the Right Format
- Italics: Use italics for the titles of larger works such as books, movies, and TV shows (when typing or in print).
- Quotation Marks: Use quotation marks for the titles of shorter works such as poems, articles, short stories, and songs.
- Underlining: Use underlining for long works like books or movies when you are handwriting.
4. Examples
- The Jungle Book (for a book or movie title).
- “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” (for a song).
- The Cat in the Hat (when handwritten).
