Identify prepositions and their objects

key notes :

  • Prepositions are words that show the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words in a sentence.
  • They help us understand where, when, or how something happens.

  • The object of a preposition is the noun or pronoun that follows the preposition.
  • It tells us more about the relationship described by the preposition.

  • Here are some common prepositions:
    • In
    • On
    • At
    • Under
    • Over
    • Between
    • Above
    • Below
    • With
    • For
    • To

  • Step 1: Look for prepositions in the sentence. They usually indicate a relationship (like location or time).
  • Step 2: Find the word that follows the preposition. This word is the object of the preposition.
  • Step 3: Together, the preposition and its object create a prepositional phrase, which adds more information to the sentence.

  • “The cat is on the table.”
    • Preposition: on; Object: table; Prepositional Phrase: on the table.
  • “She went to the store.”
    • Preposition: to; Object: store; Prepositional Phrase: to the store.
  • “The dog slept under the bed.”
    • Preposition: under; Object: bed; Prepositional Phrase: under the bed.
  • “He sat beside his friend.”
    • Preposition: beside; Object: friend; Prepositional Phrase: beside his friend.

  • Provide sentences and ask students to:
    • Underline the prepositions.
    • Circle the objects of those prepositions.
  • Example Sentences:
    1. “The ball is in the box.”
    2. “We walked through the park.”
