Water Blasters

People all over the world love to watch geysers shoot water high up into the air. A geyser is formed when underground water becomes hot enough to blast up through the rocky ground. When the boiling water turns into steam and shoots into the air, this is called an eruption.

Geysers are rare. There are only about one thousand geysers in the whole world. Most of them can be found in just five countries: the United States, Russia, Chile, New Zealand and Iceland. The largest number of the world’s geysers can be found in the United States’ Yellowstone National Park. It has more than five hundred geysers!
Yellowstone’s most famous geyser is called Old Faithful. It is hard to tell when most geysers will erupt, but Old Faithful is reliable. Old Faithful erupts about every ninety minutes. People come from all over to watch the geyser erupt. Steamboat Geyser, also in Yellowstone Park, is one of the world’s tallest geysers. It has been known to shoot boiling water up to one hundred and twenty metres in the air.

Russia’s Valley of Geysers, on the Kamchatka Peninsula, has the second-largest number of geysers. There are about two hundred geysers in the valley. One of the biggest is called Velikan, which means ‘giant’. But not many people get to see this giant. That’s because it is hard to get there. The only way to reach the valley is by helicopter.
