The Ojibwe people of North America were the first to make dream catchers. Dream catchers are said to protect against bad dreams. They are based on an old Ojibwe story. According to this story, the Ojibwe people had always been protected by someone named Spider Woman. But as the tribe spread out across North America, it became harder for Spider Woman to watch over them all. People began making dream catchers to help protect themselves.

A dream catcher is a circle made of wood. Inside the circle is a design made by weaving pieces of yarn together the way a spider makes a web. Feathers hang from the bottom of the circle. The dream catchers are said to filter bad dreams. It is said that only good dreams pass through the openings in the web. The good dreams travel down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The trapped bad dreams, on the other hand, disappear in the morning.
