Grandma’s Pictures
One morning, Raven and her grandma went to Gabe’s Cafe for breakfast. While Raven ate her pancakes and eggs, Grandma read the newspaper. After breakfast, they stayed at the table and worked on the crossword puzzle together.
‘The answer to that one is whistle,’ Raven said.
Grandma looked closely at the puzzle, and then she smiled and shook her head. ‘Well, I’ll be,’ she said as she pencilled in the answer.
When they left, Raven and Grandma took a long nature walk. Grandma carried her camera, and every now and then she would pause to take photographs. She took pictures of two birds building a nest, and one of baby turtles resting on a log.
That evening, they watched Grandma’s favourite television show. It was about spies who worked for the government. The spies followed bad guys to find out what they were up to. Raven watched one spy take pictures of the criminals and then hand off the pictures to another spy. Once, the spies almost got caught, but then they found a surprising way to stay hidden. It was an exciting show.
The next morning, Raven and her grandma went back to Gabe’s. While they ate, a man walked up to Grandma. ‘Hi, Jean,’ he said. ‘Do you have those pictures?’
‘Good morning, Roger,’ said Grandma. ‘As a matter of fact, I’ve got them with me right now.’ She patted a folder that lay in her lap.
‘Excellent. You know where to drop them off?’ Roger asked. Grandma nodded. Then Roger thanked her and walked away.
Raven stared at her grandma, who went back to eating her breakfast. ‘I’ll take care of that on our walk later,’ Grandma told her.
Raven wanted to ask her grandma about the pictures, but then she remembered the television show. She dropped her fork suddenly and looked around the cafe to see if anyone was watching Grandma. Raven saw a man whose face was partly hidden behind a newspaper. She gulped and kept quiet while she finished her breakfast.
Later, on their walk, Grandma took Raven down a path that led to an old house. Raven waited on the path while Grandma went up to the door and knocked. When nobody answered, Grandma slid her photographs under the door.
‘I guess Joe’s not home today,’ she told Raven when she returned. ‘He’s going to use my pictures in a nature calendar.’
Raven laughed. ‘Your nature pictures! Well, I’ll be,’ she said.
‘What’s so funny?’ Grandma asked.
Raven shook her head. ‘I think I’ve been watching too much television.’
