Pasta Amanda

As soon as Amanda read the invitation, she started jumping up and down. She could hardly believe her favourite cooking show had invited her to try out! Her hands shook as she dialled the number for her best friend, Joanna.

‘This is so awesome, you just can’t imagine!’ Amanda shouted. ‘I got an invitation to try out for Kids Cook! I need to send in a cooking video, so can you please help me record it? Please, please?’ Joanna was thrilled, and she agreed to record the video at Amanda’s house the next day.

When Joanna arrived with her camera, Amanda was setting up in her kitchen.

‘Are you making my favourite cheese and vegetable stew?’ Joanna asked.

‘No, it’s my special spicy pasta dish, Pasta Amanda! Let’s get started with the video. We’ll need to record three different parts. Part one is my introduction, part two is the cooking demonstration and in part three, we show the completed dish on a beautiful plate. Here—read my introduction.’

Joanna grinned as she read through what Amanda had written. ‘This will be extraordinary, Amanda,’ Joanna said with a thumbs-up. Joanna set up the camera, and when she was ready to record, she shouted, ‘Action!’ But at the sight of Joanna’s camera, Amanda forgot what she was supposed to say. No words came out, and she looked ready to cry.

‘No problem. Don’t worry, we’ll start over,’ said Joanna. ‘Just take a deep breath, forget about the camera and pretend you’re talking to me.’

Amanda closed her eyes, breathed and began again. This time she remembered what to say, and she spoke with a sparkling smile.

‘Way to go!’ Joanna exclaimed. She kept the camera going as Amanda chopped vegetables and stirred the spicy sauce.

When Amanda finished, she stopped to watch the video. ‘I forgot to mention the hot pepper,’ she said. ‘I also dropped that garlic on the stove. It can’t look messy, so we’ll have to redo the whole segment.’

‘Really?’ Joanna asked, feeling tired and hungry. But she helped Amanda clean the stove and then recorded more chopping and stirring. Amanda’s sauce smelled spicy and delicious.

This time when Amanda watched the video, she grinned.

‘Wonderful. Let’s eat now,’ said Joanna.

Amanda shook her head. ‘First, I need to create a perfect plate for the last part of the video.’

Amanda prepared four separate plates, sprinkling herbs and olive oil over each. Joanna shook her head while she watched Amanda. Joanna’s stomach growled as she glanced at the clock.

‘Let’s show this one,’ Amanda finally said, pointing to the last plate. Joanna, looking happy to be almost done, recorded Amanda with the finished dish.

‘It’s a wrap!’ Amanda said at last. ‘You’re the best, Joanna.’

‘It was no big deal! But can we have lunch now?’ Joanna asked.

‘Yes, and you can have the perfect plate,’ said Amanda.
