Bethany Road
Bethany lived in a small flat with her parents, her two older sisters and her two older brothers. One day, they squeezed into the family’s truck and drove for what seemed like hours. After a while, Mum pulled the truck onto a bumpy dirt road that led into a forest.
‘Kids, welcome to our new home,’ Dad said after they parked. Bethany leaped out of the truck, but she didn’t see a house or a block of flats. They were in a large clearing in the middle of the woods.
‘We bought this land, and we’re going to build our house here,’ Mum explained. None of the children could believe it. Bethany stretched her arms out and breathed in the fresh air. Finally, there would be some room to breathe!
After their first trip out to the woods, the family spent every weekend working on the house. First they cleared some small trees, and then they started building. Bethany’s sisters were in charge of moving bags of cement from the truck to the building area. Bethany liked to help them. Once, she was trying to push a heavy bag onto the top of a stack. But then the whole pile wobbled and spilled onto the ground. ‘Bethany, I think you should go help Mum instead,’ her sister Alice said, staring at the mess.
Bethany’s two brothers helped her parents carry wood and tools, and sometimes they helped build things. One day, Bethany tried to help out by carrying two long boards, but she tripped over a hammer and dropped them. Everyone jumped when they crashed to the ground. ‘Actually, Bethany, how about you bring us some water?’ Mum suggested.
After that, Bethany was only allowed to fetch water and snacks. She felt frustrated because she wanted to be a part of the building project.
Later that week, Bethany noticed a clump of orange wildflowers growing in the woods. They sparked an idea for how to help. While the rest of her family worked, Bethany dug up orange flowers in the woods and planted them along the side of the dirt road. She didn’t think anyone else noticed, but she thought the flowers made the clearing feel more like a home.
After months of hard work, their home was finally finished. On the day they moved in, the family’s truck turned onto the dirt road. Bethany was glad to see all of her orange flowers along the path. But she also noticed a new road sign, which read ‘Bethany Road’.
‘Really?’ Bethany asked. ‘It’s named after me?’ Mum and Dad smiled at her.
Soon the truck pulled up to their new house. ‘Welcome home, everyone!’ Dad said.
