Form and use the regular past tense

  • The past tense is used to talk about actions that have already happened.
  • It helps us describe things that took place before the present time.

  • Regular past tense verbs are formed by adding -ed to the base form of the verb.
  • This means you change the present tense verb to its past form by adding -ed at the end.

  • Rule: Add -ed to the end of the verb.
  • Examples:
    • Walk → Walked
    • Talk → Talked
    • Play → Played
  • Some verbs have special spelling rules when forming the past tense:
    • Verbs ending in “e”: Just add -d.
    • Example: Like → Liked
    • One-syllable verbs ending in a consonant, vowel, consonant: Double the last consonant before adding -ed.
    • Example: Sit → Sat → Sitted (incorrect) but Sat (correct)
    • Verbs ending in “y”: Change “y” to “i” and add -ed.
    • Example: Cry → Cried

  • Use the regular past tense to describe actions completed in the past.
  • Examples:
    • I played soccer yesterday.
    • She cleaned her room last week.
    • They visited their grandparents over the weekend.

  • Example List:
    1. Jump → __ (Jumped)
    2. Watch → __ (Watched)
    3. Start → __ (Started)
