Is the sentence in the past, present or future tense?

key notes :

  • Tense tells us when an action happens: in the past, present, or future.

  • Describes actions that have already happened.
  • Keywords: yesterday, last week, ago, in 2020, etc.
  • Examples:
    • I played soccer yesterday. (Action happened in the past)
    • She was happy last year.

  • Describes actions that are happening right now or are true.
  • Keywords: now, today, usually, every day, etc.
  • Examples:
    • I play soccer every Saturday. (Action is happening now)
    • He is happy today.

  • Describes actions that will happen later.
  • Keywords: tomorrow, next week, soon, later, etc.
  • Examples:
    • I will play soccer tomorrow. (Action will happen in the future)
    • She will be happy next week.

  • Read the sentences and decide the tense:
    1. I walked to school yesterday. (Past)
    2. She reads a book every night. (Present)
    3. They will visit their grandparents next month. (Future)

  • Look for verb endings:
    • -ed usually indicates past tense.
    • Present tense verbs often stay in their base form or may have -s for third-person singular (he, she, it).
    • Future tense often uses “will” or “going to” before the verb.
