‘Kha, you skipped a space!’ shouted Maia.
‘I did not!’ said Kha.
Maia and Kha sat on the banks of the Nile River. A game board was drawn in the sand between them. Carved game pieces sat on the squares. They were playing senet, a popular game in ancient Egypt.
Maia counted the squares carefully. ‘All right,’ she agreed. ‘You didn’t cheat. But I’m watching you!’ Holding a game piece, she walked to the edge of the river. Then she playfully dangled the game piece over the water.
‘Maia, don’t!’ cried Kha. ‘It took me forever to make those!’
‘I was joking,’ said Maia. ‘You know I wouldn’t really do that.’ She walked back and sat down. ‘Come on, it’s my turn.’
