Order alphabetically based on the first three letters

Arranging Words: The First Three Letters

Sometimes, words start with the same first letter. When this happens, we look at the second letter. But what if the first two letters are the same? Then, we look at the third letter! Here’s how to do it:

  1. Look at the first letter of each word.
  2. If the first letters are different, put the words in order based on those letters.
  3. If the first letters are the same, look at the second letter.
  4. If the first two letters are the same, look at the third letter.
  5. Continue until you find a letter that is different, and then put the words in that order.
Practice Example

Let’s try this with these words: Cat, Apple, Dog, Elephant, Banana, Cherry, Carrot

Here’s how we’ll organize them:

  1. Apple (starts with ‘A’)
  2. Banana (starts with ‘B’)
  3. Carrot (starts with ‘Car’)
  4. Cat (starts with ‘Cat’)
  5. Cherry (starts with ‘Che’)
  6. Dog (starts with ‘D’)
  7. Elephant (starts with ‘E’)

Why Carrot comes before Cat and Cherry: because ‘Car’ comes before ‘Cat’ and ‘Che’ in the alphabet!
