How to Spot the Differences

Here’s how we can tell related words apart:

  1. Think about the meaning: What does each word make you think of?
  2. Consider the feeling: Does one word have a stronger feeling than the other?
  3. Look at how they’re used: Can you use them in the same sentence? If not, why?
Examples of Related Words
Happy & Joyful

Both describe feeling good.
Happy is a general feeling of contentment.
Joyful is a stronger, more excited feeling.
Big & Enormous

Both describe size.
Big means larger than usual.
Enormous means extremely large; gigantic!
Sad & Depressed
