What are Synonyms?

Synonyms are words that have almost the same meaning! They are like word friends. Using synonyms makes our writing and speaking more interesting. Instead of saying “happy” all the time, we can also say “joyful,” “glad,” or “cheerful!”

Finding Synonyms in a Sentence

Sometimes, you can find synonyms hiding in the same sentence! Look for words that are used close together that seem to describe the same thing. Here’s how to be a Synonym Searcher:

  1. Read the sentence carefully.
  2. Think about what each word means.
  3. Look for words that have similar meanings.
  4. Check: Do the words make sense if you swap them?
