Identifying Common Characteristics:
- To select members of a group, first identify the common characteristics that define the group.
- Example: For a group of animals, the common characteristic might be “mammals.”
Examples of Groups:
- Animals: Mammals (dog, cat), Birds (sparrow, eagle)
- Fruits: Citrus fruits (orange, lemon), Berries (strawberry, blueberry)
- Colors: Warm colors (red, orange), Cool colors (blue, green)
Sorting and Categorizing:
- Sorting by Type: Group items based on their type (e.g., fruits vs. vegetables).
- Sorting by Function: Group items based on what they do (e.g., tools for eating vs. tools for cleaning).
Selecting Members:
- Look at the list of items or people and compare each one with the common characteristics of the group.
- Only items that share the common characteristics belong to the group.
