Form compound words
key notes:
What are Compound Words? |
Imagine you have two LEGO bricks. You can click them together to make something bigger and new, right? Compound words are like that! They’re formed when we join two words to create a new word with a new meaning.
For example:
Flower (a pretty plant) | Sun (the big, bright star) |
When we combine sun and flower, we get sunflower! It’s a big, yellow flower that looks like the sun!
More Fun Examples! |
Pop + Corn = Popcorn (Yummy snack at the movies!) | Foot + Ball = Football (A fun sport we play with our feet!) |
Rain + Bow = Rainbow (Colorful arc after the rain!) | Tooth + Brush = Toothbrush (Keeps our teeth clean!) |
Time to Practice! |
Let’s see if you can make your own compound words! Match the words on the left with the words on the right to make a new word. Write the complete compound word on a piece of paper.
A. cake B. fly C. fish D. fight | Butter Fire Pancake Star |
Answers:
- Butterfly
- Firefight
- Pancake
- Starfish
Why are Compound Words Useful? |
Compound words are useful because they help us be more creative with our language! They also help us describe things in a shorter, easier way! Instead of saying “a ball you kick with your foot,” we can just say “football”!
Next Steps |
Keep an eye out for compound words in your books, and when you’re talking to your friends and family. Try to make up your own compound words too! Have fun combining words!
