Identify multiplication expressions for arrays

What is an Array? 🟦🟦🟦

  • An array is a way to arrange objects in rows and columns.
  • Example: 3 rows of 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Rows × Columns = Total Objects ➕✖️

  • Rows = horizontal lines of objects.
  • Columns = vertical lines of objects.
  • Multiply rows × columns to get the total number of objects.

Example:

  • Array: 2 rows × 5 columns
  • Multiplication expression: 2 × 5 = 10 🎉
  • There are 10 objects in total.

Arrays Show Multiplication in Real Life 🥕🍎

  • Fruits in a basket, chairs in a classroom, tiles on a floor.
  • Example: 4 rows of 3 apples = 4 × 3 = 12 apples 🍏🍏🍏

Order Matters in Arrays 🔄

  • Rows × Columns is different from Columns × Rows only visually.
  • 2 × 5 = 10 (2 rows of 5) ✅
  • 5 × 2 = 10 (5 rows of 2) ✅
  • Total objects are the same, but rows and columns arrangement changes.

Practice Tip: ✏️

  • Draw arrays with objects and count them.
  • Write the multiplication expression below each array.
  • Use stickers, dots, or emojis to make it fun! 🌟

Fun Challenge: 🎯

  • If an array has 3 rows and 6 columns, how many total objects are there?
  • Write the multiplication expression: 3 × 6 = 18

1 x 4

2 x 4

The array has 2 rows of dots.

Each row has 4 dots.

There are 2 rows with 4 dots in each row. The expression that describes the array is:

  • 2 x 4
  • 3 x 4
