Addition patterns over increasing place values

Place Values:

  • Ones (1) – smallest place value.
  • Tens (10) – next bigger place value.
  • Hundreds (100) – bigger than tens.
  • Thousands (1000) – bigger than hundreds.

Addition Patterns:

  • When we add the same number to 1-digit, 2-digit, 3-digit, or 4-digit numbers, a pattern is formed.
  • Each time, the place value of the digits increases, but the addition rule remains the same.

  • 4 + 5 = 9
  • 40 + 5 = 45
  • 400 + 5 = 405
  • 4000 + 5 = 4005

👉 Pattern: As we move to higher place values, the digit 4 shifts (ones → tens → hundreds → thousands), but we still add 5.

  • 6 + 10 = 16
  • 60 + 10 = 70
  • 600 + 10 = 610
  • 6000 + 10 = 6010

👉 Pattern: The number 6 changes place value each time, but the addition is still by 10.

  • 8 + 25 = 33
  • 80 + 25 = 105
  • 800 + 25 = 825
  • 8000 + 25 = 8025

👉 Pattern: The basic addition is the same, only the zeros increase as the place value grows.

  • In addition patterns, zeros are added when numbers shift to bigger place values.
  • The last digits remain the same pattern as in small numbers.
  • Always line up numbers according to place value before adding.

Fill in the blanks:

  • 3 + 7 = ___
  • 30 + 7 = ___
  • 300 + 7 = ___
  • 3000 + 7 = ___

3 + ____ = 8

30 + ____ = 80

300 + ____ = 800

Find the first missing number:

3 ones + 5 ones = 8 ones
3 + 5 = 8

Now complete the pattern:

3 tens + 5 tens = 8 tens
30 + 50 = 80

3 hundreds + 5 hundreds = 8 hundreds
300 + 500 = 800

 _____+ 1 = 4

______+ 10 = 40

_______ + 100 = 400

Find the first missing number:

ones + 1 one = 4 ones
3 + 1 = 4

Now complete the pattern:

tens + 1 ten = 4 tens
30 + 10 = 40

hundreds + 1 hundred = 4 hundreds
300 + 100 = 400

8 + 8 = _____

80 + 80 = _____

800 + 800 = ______

First, add:

ones + 8 ones = 16 ones
8 + 8 = 16

Now complete the pattern:

tens + 8 tens = 16 tens
80 + 80 = 160

hundreds + 8 hundreds = 16 hundreds
800 + 800 = 1,600

Let’s practice!
